Transport

mksm already has excellent transport links, located in the centre of the country and only a short distance from London, Oxford, Cambridge and the Midlands. mksm’s key connectivity includes:

  • A wide range of mainline railways with fast routes into London, the midlands and the north,
  • Easily accessible connections to Europe via Kings Cross St Pancras;
  • International links via London Luton Airport, as well direct links to many other airports;
  • M1 as a core national north-south connection.

A lot of investment has gone into this infrastructure, both historically and more recently. Recent improvements include:

  • M1 lane widening;
  • Part of the £6 billion Thameslink rail improvements from Bedford through London;
  • Other rail improvements, including the new station at Corby and planned station redevelopments at Luton and Bedford.

However, to achieve the full scale of new homes and jobs planned in mksm further investment will be needed. Growth of mksm’s transport offer will need to compliment its economic growth. This is supported by the Government’s Eddington report which firmly identified transport as a key driver of economic growth But new infrastructure alone cannot unlock the full potential - accessible and sustainable transport are all part of an integrated solution.
